The annual Thacher Native Plant Sale is one of our biggest events of the year, helping to distribute beautiful native plants throughout the Capital Region. This year’s theme is “Grow Biodiversity to Build Climate Resilience.”
Based on shoppers’ feedback, we’ve made a few improvements to this year’s sale, but we’re also holding steady on the things that gardeners love. For example, 2026 prices will remain reasonable, ranging from $5 for a small pot to $100 for a more established specimen. And we will continue to offer plants that are nearly all native to New York, though a few are not technically native but have naturalized, behave well and support wildlife. All plants will be straight species that have grown here for centuries, rather than nativars or cultivars.
Here’s what’s new this year:
Staggered entry: If you’ve been to the sale before, you know how popular it is. This year we’re going to try to ease the chaos with a staggered entry system. Shoppers will take a ticket when they arrive at the site, then they’ll be invited to enter the plant sale area in number order. Tickets will be distributed starting at 9:30 a.m.
Food truck: While you’re waiting, the Plated Palette Food Truck will be on hand to offer breakfast burritos, sandwiches and other items.
Expanded inventory: We have more than 3,000 plants available for sale this year from partner growers like the Native Plant Trust, SUNY Cobleskill, Keystone Wildflowers and the Saratoga Tree Nursery. New native plant source: This year our friends from Home Earth Alliance will be joining the sale with plants from the IMAGINE Native Plant Farm. They specialize in growing straight native species from seed responsibly collected in the ecoregions that comprise the greater Capital Region.
The annual event is presented by Wild Ones Capital Region NY, Friends of Thacher State Park and the Emma Treadwell Thacher Nature Center. Proceeds benefit Wild Ones and the Friends of Thacher.
