While it may be cold outside now is the perfect time to start planning for our Monarch Butterfly friends! East of the Rocky Mountains the Monarch migrates to the Oyamel Fir trees in Central Mexico. As early as March the Monarch starts its migration north into Texas and eventually their offspring will reach us in the Capital Region of New York! If you would like more details about the Monarch Migration check out Monarch Joint Venture. We will bundle up on March 16th (rain date March 26th) and enjoy a walk and symbolize the kick-off of the Monarch Migration. While we will be doing the blue path at The Crossings of Colonie only 1.25 miles the Monarch will be starting their 2,740-mile migration to us in New York. March is also the perfect time to plant Milkweed seeds as they need to cold stratify for at least 30 days before they start to grow. We will be handing out free native milkweed seeds, all you need to do is scatter them in your garden bed when you get home. Make sure to check back to this page along with our Facebook and Instagram for updates as this event is dependent on the weather. If you would like to continue our efforts of educating about native landscapes please consider joining our Wild Ones chapter by joining here.
