Wild Ones Capital Region New York and several other like-minded organizations are bringing native plants and sustainable landscapes/practices to the Capital Region Flower and Garden Show! Our members will be volunteering at the event to help answer questions at the exhibit. There will also be several presentations focused on these principles over the course of the weekend including a few from our very own members! Just look for the little sprout next to the presenter's name!
This is going to be a great opportunity to connect with thousands of gardeners and inspire them to bring nature right to their front door. Please keep an eye on this event as more details become available we will highlight them here.

A wildflower walk through woodland and karst, and large cave sink holes to identify a variety of swamp and woodland plant life including trillium, ramps, wild ginger, trout lily and much much more.
Directions: For GPS you will need to go to the junction of Ice Cave Rd and Lykers rd. Lykers Rd & Ice Cave Rd The cave drive is just north of that opposite a school bus sign (Dropped pin). They will leave a car on the side of the road to mark the entrance.

Pollinator Palooza

Last year Pollinator Palooza sold out of native plants so this year Sustainable Saratoga asked us to attend and bring additional plants for sale! We do suggest you get there right at 10 though as demand is increasing for plants. Cash and Checks are preferred, PayPal is an option but the cell phone service is not the best so we do not suggest relying on it.

Mountain Top Arboretum Tour
Public Welcome Group Tour Nature Walk/Hike Lots of Physical Activity
Meet at Mountain Top’s timber frame Education Center, built from twenty-one different species of native trees from the Arboretum’s forest. We will then step outside to explore the Center’s landscape design by Jamie Purinton, which uses plants native to the Catskills to create wetland, woodland edge, and high-elevation bedrock outcrop habitats. Of special note will be the series of six interconnected rain gardens, an especially important element for the Arboretum’s site at the top of the Catskill Watershed. (The Catskill Watershed, combined with the Delaware Watershed, provides drinking water to 9,000,000 New Yorkers daily.) Among other features, easily accessible to tour are the Bird Cove, planted with shrubs and perennials native to the northeast US, and the Spiral Labyrinth, a spiral garden designed by

Substantial off-street parking is available, look for the sign that says SLOW MOW YEAR-ROUND.
Since 2015, Johanna keeps finding ways to squeeze more native plants onto her fifth-acre plot without completely forsaking areas of lawn that grew in naturally (bunnies love the dandelions and clover). A few cultivars remain, but overall, Johanna’s garden is roughly 90% straight species, the majority sourced from Wild Things Rescue Nursery.

A Slowly and Constantly Evolving Landscape ...
When Chris moved to Juniper Place in 2012, with the exception of the mature maples, there were less than ten plants on the property. That year three rhododendrons and a handful of perennials were added and in 2014 more defined beds were formed. In 2016, the sandy circle where an above ground pool once sat, was transformed into a koi pond complete with a babbling brook.

A celebration of Capital Region NY Wild Ones leadership team. This meeting was held outdoors in the gazebo at the Albany County Cooperative Extension location, at 5:30 PM. There was a casual appreciation dinner provided, a brief business meeting, and a chance to tour the CCE gardens.
we reviewed and celebrated our accomplishments in the nearly 2 year mark of being an official chapter. We discussed what going forward will look like, including a discussion on how our chapter will represent iteslf and native plants at the 2024 Flower & Garden Show.

Join Wild Ones Honorary Director Heather Holm as she explores the nesting habitats, life cycles, pollen collection, brood rearing, and general characteristics of some of the most common native bees in eastern North America, while highlighting the pollination of native plants and the mutualism between native plants and native bees.
When creating and managing thriving habitats for native bees, many factors such as seasonal phenology, nesting strategies, and flower preferences must be considered—and with approximately 3,600 species in North America (north of Mexico), there are many unique aspects to keep in mind when managing successful landscapes for bees.

Enjoy a family friendly event celebrating our New York native plants with a seed swap. Please pre register any seeds you wish to bring on our website so we can have plant care signs made. This is a public event and even if you do not have seeds you are welcome to take home seeds. Emma Treadwell staff will be doing seed balls and winter sowing again. Our crafts station and native plant inspired bake sale both return. New this year will be a children’s book reading and a painting workshop. Help us have a fantastic event and invite your friends and family to join.
