Let’s kick off the Thacher plant sale

| Native plant sale

The annual Thacher Native Plant Sale is still five months away but, as gardeners know, it’s already time to start planning for a successful growing season. And we are looking for volunteers.

Join Wild Ones on Saturday, Jan. 11, from 1-3 p.m. at the Emma Treadwell Thacher Nature Center (87 Nature Center Way, Voorheesville) as we kick off preparations for one of our most popular annual events. (Snow date is Sunday, Jan. 12.)

We’re looking for volunteers interested in helping to pot up plants as they arrive from growers, water plants throughout the spring and assist with a multitude of tasks on the day of the sale. Gardeners with advanced knowledge can help mentor other volunteers.

But as usual, the January kickoff event isn’t all about work. There will be food, live music and plenty of time to enjoy an afternoon connecting with folks who share an interest in spreading the word about native plants.

Last year’s Native Plant Sale attracted 250 gardeners who purchased about 1500 native plants to bring home to gardens, yards and meadows across the Capital Region. It’s a collaboration with Friends of Thacher Park and the Emma Treadwell Thacher Nature Center with proceeds benefitting Wild Ones and the Friends of Thacher. Forty-nine volunteers helped make it all happen. The 2025 spring sale takes place on Saturday, May 17, at the Overlook at John Boyd Thacher State Park.

Register for the January kickoff event by calling (518) 872-0800 or signing up here.
