Dear Wild Ones members:
This fall’s weather has been perfect for saving the seeds that can yield a beautiful spring garden bursting with native species. As the weather changes, Wild Ones Capital Region members have kept busy gathering, sorting, and packaging up seeds for our Native Plant Celebration and Seed Swap.
You can share the bounty by joining us for festivities on Saturday, Nov. 14, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Thacher State Park. (Details are here.)
The event is a great opportunity to connect with fellow gardeners, share your favorite local seeds and discover new varieties to cultivate. There’s no problem if you don’t have seeds to share, we have plenty for all. Besides the seed swap, the celebration will feature tables from various like-minded organizations, crafts for kids, and adults, and a bake sale featuring native ingredients. This year we’ll host informational tables from the Friends of Thacher, Mills Park of Kinderhook, and the Environmental Clearing House of Schenectady (ECOS).
There’s still time to collect your own seeds to share. Register them before the event here. We prefer that you pre-register your seeds but if that’s not possible, you may simply bring your seeds the day of the event. Arrival by 10 a.m. is recommended for anyone bringing seeds.
If you haven’t collected seeds before, you can find some hints from Margaret Roach’s A Way to Garden podcast interview with Tim Johnson of the Native Plant Trust. More information is here.
See you Saturday, November 14, 2026, at the Visitors Center at John Boyd Thacher Park for the Wild Ones Native Plant Celebration and Seed Swap.
